If you are like many homeowners, you have probably wondered if gutters are even necessary.
The basic function of a gutter is to provide a channel for redirecting water. They are designed specifically to reduce erosion by guiding water to a drain or safe area. Gutters have a limited capacity and may overflow, although they still effectively remove a large volume of water. Rain gutters are affixed to your roof and are usually made of aluminum, copper, or plastic. By redirecting rainwater, the gutter reduces erosion of the ground against your home and may greatly decrease the risk of basement flooding and foundation damage.
The fact is there are several reasons to have gutters installed on your home, not the least of which is to prevent damage to your home. If you weren’t aware of it, water causes more damage to homes than anything else. Why get drowned every time you leave your home in a downpour?
When rain pours off the roof, you get soaked trying to get out the door. This can be prevented! While this isn’t really one of the most important reasons to have gutters installed, it’s still something to think about.
Water can cause considerable damage to your home.
There are various ways that rainwater can damage your home. For one, rain can curl under the eaves of the roof and down siding, causing mold and damage to paint. Rain that pools near your foundation can seep into the basement if it isn’t properly sealed.
Additionally, pooling around the foundation can cause the foundation of your home to settle and crack. If you have a deck on your home, the wood is prone to warping and will rot much sooner because of the direct downpour of water.
Hard rain can literally destroy your landscaping efforts. If you have flower beds or other landscaping close to your home, you can almost see your flowers and plants floating away in a hard rain! Not only will the water eventually make a trench under the eaves around the perimeter of your home, it can destroy beautiful (not to mention) landscaping.
Unless you live in an area where it never rains, having rain gutters or gutter covers installed on your home is extremely important. Considering the potential damage to your home, isn’t it worth protecting your most costly investment?
